Things to Know Before the Gokyo Renjo La Pass Trek
1. Trek Duration and Difficulty
The trek usually takes 12 to 14 days to complete. It is considered moderate to challenging because of the high altitude and some steep climbs, especially while crossing the Renjo La Pass (5,360m). A good level of fitness and stamina is important.
2. Altitude and Acclimatization
Since the trek goes above 5,000 meters, altitude sickness is a risk. To stay safe, take rest days for acclimatization in places like Namche Bazaar and Gokyo village. Drink plenty of water and don’t rush the climb.
3. Weather and Clothing
Temperatures can vary a lot. Days can be warm while nights are cold, especially above 4,000 meters. Bring warm clothes, including thermal layers, a down jacket, gloves, a hat, and good trekking boots. Rain gear is needed for sudden weather changes.
4. Cultural Respect and Local People
The trek passes through Sherpa villages rich in culture and traditions. Respect local customs by:
- Removing shoes before entering monasteries
- Asking permission before taking photos of people
- Speaking politely and dressing modestly
5. Health and Safety
Carry a basic first aid kit and any personal medicines. Altitude sickness medicine like Diamox can help but consult your doctor first. Drink boiled or purified water and avoid eating raw food.
Transportation
Best season
The best seasons are spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is clear with good mountain views. Winters are very cold, and the trail can be covered with snow. Monsoon season (June to August) brings heavy rain and slippery trails.
Permits
You need two permits for this trek:
- TIMS Card (Trekkers’ Information Management System)
- Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit
These can be obtained in Kathmandu or at the park entrance near Monjo.
